A group of business change consultants needed to develop and enhance their coaching skills. As consultants working on projects across functions and organisations, they had an identified need to be able to communicate effectively and achieve optimum performance from diverse characters within businesses, both internal and external.
Destination
The task was to design and deliver a three day Coaching Skills workshop with supplementary subject modules that served to underpin and increase learning.
Specifically the programme set out to help them understand their personal dynamics and their impact on others within the coaching scenario. It majored on their questioning and listening skills; the management of their own emotions and the client’s; the articulation of effective performance objectives and action plans to improve them; the importance of monitoring and measuring success against actions.
After each day, there were opportunities to participate in supplementary action learning sets. These permitted the participants to discuss with their peers and the facilitators on going ‘live’ issues which they encountered daily. It allowed for shared experiences and for further instruction where appropriate; all centred around the business challenges faced by the participants.

Participants on the programme told us it resulted in them not only developing the people around them but that, on a business performance basis, it assisted them in the more effective diagnosis of their clients’ needs and therefore, a more timely and pertinent solution. On a personal basis, it increased their self awareness, their ability to handle conflict and raised their confidence levels around their relationships with others.
